The Lowry Hotel has taken a huge leap in its sustainability programme by taking part in the initiative.
Clean The World is a social enterprise dedicated to WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene and sustainability). They are global leaders whose soap scheme helps to prevent millions of hygiene-related illnesses and deaths every year.
Shipped off to Clean The World’s recycling centre in Amsterdam, the half-used soaps from The Lowry Hotel are sanitised then ground into “soap noodles” (soap noodles!) before they are pressed and cut into brand spanking new 80g bars – impressive!
The brand new soap is then distributed to numerous charities across the globe. Since 2009, the foundation has served over 10 million individuals and distributed 53 million bars of soap and 5 million hygiene kits in 127 countries.
It operates soap recycling centres and offices in Orlando, Montreal, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Washington DC and Punta Cana and leads a “Global Hygiene Revolution” to distribute recycled soap and hygiene products from more than 8,000 hotel, resort and cruise partners.
The Lowry Hotel has been taking regular steps in order to reduce their carbon footprint and build on their sustainability programme, including the introduction of sustainably sourced produce in their restaurant and their new ‘eco turndown’ option for guests.
Although miniature toiletries in hotel rooms are a novelty to many, they are one of the biggest causes of waste in the industry – with hundreds being thrown away only half-used. It’s an industry which needs to see change – and fast.
The Lowry Hotel is one of four hotels in Manchester taking part in the initiative, alongside The Dakota, Hotel Gotham & Hilton Manchester Airport.
