It’s everyone’s favourite time of the week – the time that nobody looks forward to where I list the things happening this week that have caught my eye. There’s quite a few decent events happening this weekend, but it sort of dies down in the mid-week. It looks like this week might just have to be the week when you catch up on mid-week Corrie instead.
Castlefield Food Festival
Thursday 11th May – Sunday 14th May
At the moment if you want to get some food around Castlefield you can either head to The Wharf, sit in on the terrace at Dukes 92 with 1,000 people from Sale or dredge the canal in the vain hope of catching some cockles or a discarded goldfish. Well, not this weekend. Head to the Castlefield Bowl for an eclectic choice of belting street food and drinks including craft ales, local gins and a ton of cocktails. There will also be food master-classes, demonstrations and live music to keep you there as well as a load of other random events popping up here and there that I can’t really be bothered to list here. Check out the website for all of this information you lazy bugger. The festival starts on Thursday 11th and finishes on Sunday 14th.

Cocktails in the City
Friday 12th May, 6pm
Ever since Barry Tremble, legendary bartender in NY decided to mix some vodka with a can of Irn Bru, cocktails have been massive business for bars and pubs around the world. During the 70’s you could sup a Sex On The Beach while listening to Barry Manilow sing about some tart called Lola – safe in the knowledge that you were infinitely classier than the Neanderthals drinking Shandy Bass. Cocktails are even bigger nowadays and nothing proves this more than the fact that Cocktails in the City is celebrating its 5th year in Manchester. It’s basically a collection of 25 of the city’s finest bars all under one roof including The Alchemist, Cottonopolis, Hawksmoor, Hula, Science & Industry and Tattu. There’s loads more but once again – I’m not going to bother listing them or this article will end up looking like a bloody Excel document. Head on over to Granada Studios on Friday 12th from 6pm ‘til 11pm for all the banter.

G-A-Y Eurovision Party

Yes, it’s that time of year that nobody looks forward to except perhaps myself and the entire gay community in over 40 countries throughout Europe – Eurovision. G-A-Y are hosting a Eurovision party where you can watch a load of terrible singers, atrocious fashions and disastrous dancing all while getting suitably drunk and merry. To be fair, I bloody love Eurovision and will be having a little party of my own at Brown Towers, but if you fancy something a little larger, with a much bigger crowd – head on over to G-A-Y in the Village and cheer on Lucie Jones as she slowly drowns her sorrows with Prosecco as the collective might of Europe gives us nil-point.

Sunday Film Reel @ Odd Bar

This week sees the release of Alien Covenant, the new Ridley Scott movie which follows the trials and tribulations of a load of future people, travelling through space probably getting killed by an alien with bigger gums than me. If you’re interested in watching this new movie, and have a terrible memory and can’t remember the previous ones, Odd Bar are showing both Alien (1979) and Prometheus (2012) as part of their Sunday Film Reel session which should give you the perfect basis in which to tackle this new chapter. It starts at 2pm and will end around 8ish.

Twin Peaks Quiz
Thursday 18th May, 8pm
I’ve already written about this quiz right here so I can’t really be bothered to repeat myself too much. Basically it’s a quiz held at Gorilla where you will need to answer questions based on the hit early 90’s TV show Twin Peaks. The TV show features Kyle MacLachlan trying to solve the death of Laura Palmer in a backwards town called Twin Peaks which manages to make Oldham look like Beverley Hills. On the way you’re introduced to some proper psychos as well as a backwards-talking midget who likes to peek out from behind red curtains. Cruise on down if you fancy it.
