This article has been written for two types of people. There’s those of you who have never visited Volta in West Didsbury before, and those of you who have.
For those of you who have been before – this will act as a little reminder of how bloody good it is – not that it’s easy to forget, just that when I finally visited over the weekend (after a 2 month hiatus) I quickly realised that I’d missed it. Missed it dearly.
For those who haven’t been – here’s the 4-1-1…
Volta is an industrial-chic bar and restaurant in the heart of West Didsbury. There’s a kitchen full of award-winning food, all inspired by the travels of owners Justin Crawford and Luke Cowdrey (The Unabombers).
The globally inspired menu aims to bring a taste of all corners of the globe to 167 Burton Road. Based on a love for travelling and what you stumble across when you do, the menu boasts an impressive selection of dishes from Asian to the humble Sunday Roast.
Dishes such as a the Chickpea Daal (£5.50) sit alongside other worldly delights like the Lamb Shawarma (£7.50), Iberico Chorizo (£5) and Lebanese Lamb Chops (£9).
Specialising in a kind of tapas-style, small plate style of eating, you can order a range of different plates from different cuisines and all tuck in.
It’s also important to talk about their fantastic Sunday Roast because all anybody really wants to do is eat some seriously good comfort food that includes bucket loads of gravy.
Luckily, the huge Sunday Roast Platter (£29.50 for 2 people) will comfortably feed you and your significant other enough so that you can crawl back into bed, bellies full and Netflix on without a care in the world. You’ll be so full it might even make you forget it’s Monday tomorrow.
The platter comes piled high with Roast Beef, Pork and Chicken, alongside crunchy and fluffy roasties, seasonal greens, mash, Yorkshires, carrots… basically everything you could ever dream of.
I’ve also heard about a brunch menu that will make your Instagram dreams wet with Prosecco, avocado and sourdough. Served until mid-afternoon every Saturday you can even drag your hungover little soul down for some good coffee and plenty of bacon.
Volta regularly changes its cocktail menu too, which continues the theme with some true worldly twists on classics. There’s the Japanese Mojito; mashing up Cuba and Japan in one tall glass, and the Dry Pear Mai Tai mixing a tiki classic with Spanish flavours. They’re that good you won’t want to put it down and when you do you’ll be gasping for another.
They’ve also just jumped on the natural wine train to provide some delicious and chemical-free wine to suburbia. The selection includes plenty of whites and reds and even a pink so there is sure to be something for everyone.
Of course, there’s plenty of offers including the happy hour ‘5 O’Clock Drop’ (Mon – Friday, 5pm – 7pm) which sees all your favourite cocktails or a glass of wine for just a fiver, and a bottle of Prosecco for £15.
Volta might just be the ultimate suburban neighbourhood spot, showing everyone else how it’s done. Just head out to the south side of the city next time you’re stuck for what to do on the weekend and I can guarantee 1. You’ll be impressed and 2. You’ll probably want to move to West Didsbury like the rest of Manchester.
