September sees a huge variety of shows across the city, each as dramatic, fantastic and electric as the next. From film scores to Dolly Parton tributes to history live on stage, September is well and truly show month!
A Series of Truths @ Hope Mill Theatre
Wednesday 4th & Thursday 5th September
Taken straight from the mouths of young people, A Series of Truths combines two original pieces from Actors House company’s ‘Listen to Us’ and portrays the explosive, fast and furious lives of 16 – 25 year olds.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in Concert @ Bridgewater Hall
Saturday 7th September
Don’t lie to me and say you’re not a fan of Harry Potter. Everyone and their mums are a fan of Harry Potter. We love the books, the films, made not least by the wonderful film score. So now you can watch the film with a beautiful live score to really bring the magic to life.
&Juliet @ Opera House
Tuesday 10th – Saturday 14th September
What if Juliet’s famous ending was really just her beginning? This new musical sees Juliet getting over Romeo by running off to Paris with Nurse and her best friends on a whirlwind trip of romance and self-discovery.
Danny and the Deep Blue Sea @ Hope Mill Theatre
Tuesday 10th – Thursday 12th September
No, not a modern re-telling of Danny the Champion of the World, but instead a story of a troubled mother and a teenage son who consistently butt heads, whilst also exploring our humanity through violence, insanity, love and hate.
Fastlove: A Tribute to George Michael @ Bridgewater Hall
Friday 13th September
Oh George, god do we miss you. I mean, if you don’t already listen to Wham! / solo George Michael stuff most days to keep his memory alive then shame on you. If you do, then this tribute is one for you.
Macbeth @ Royal Exchange Theatre
Friday 13th – Saturday 19th September
A play that needs no introduction but only the promise that you’ll be the first to watch this stunning version directed by Christopher Haydon. Just don’t say the title to any of your actor friends before, during or after the show – it’ll only upset them.
National Theatre: A Taste of Honey @ The Lowry
Friday 13th – 21st September
The British classic A Taste of Honey depicts working class life in post-war Salford. It couldn’t be more fitting to watch this exhilarating play in the heart of Salford.
9 to 5 The Musical @ Palace Theatre
Tuesday 17th – Saturday 21st September
Hands up if you love Dolly Parton! If you didn’t put your hand up, have you any actual, valid reason why? She is, if nothing else, a complete and utter legend. So you can enjoy all her best hits in this brilliant musical at Palace Theatre for a limited time only.
An Irresponsible Father’s Guide to Parenting @ The Lowry
Thursday 19th September
Part of this year’s SICK! Festival, this comedy show is the brainchild of Laurence Clark, someone who’s disability doesn’t stand in the way of him being an irresponsible father, it’s more to do with his personality. Growing up he never saw dads with cerebral palsy; which made him think he’d never be a parent himself – but this show takes a sideways (and hilarious) view on parenting and disabilities.

Remember those excellent books from when we were kids? Well, most of us that read the books way back when probably have kids of our own now, so why not take them to see the live action versions, which will surely be a riot from the start.
Under Three Moons @ The Lowry

Spanning half a lifetime, ‘Under Three Moons’ takes place on three nights across three decades of two friends’ lives. From boyhood through to manhood, then into fatherhood, the play covers everything from growing up, friendship and all things in between.

An adaptation of Patrick Dennis’ bestseller ‘Auntie Mame’, MAME stars two-time Olivier Award winning Tracie Bennett and Jerry Herman’s celebrated score. I wouldn’t miss this for the world if I were you!
