Sat 29 Oct, 23:00: The Evil Dead
Dir Sam Raimi/US 1981/85 mins (certificate 18) Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, Hal Delrich, Sarah York
Come and celebrate Halloween at Cornerhouse by joining us to watch “the number one Video Nasty” (as declared by Mary Whitehouse), and the film that was the subject of at least 40 obscenity trials in the UK during the height of the video nasty hysteria of the 1980’s. Now regarded as a masterpiece in modern horror and still the defining film of director Sam Raimi’s continuing career, few films have made such an impact on audiences, filmmakers and censorship law as The Evil Dead. Pressure groups tried to ban it, filmmakers have imitated it and horror fans continue to love it. This full and uncut version tells the story of a group of friends who go holidaying in a log cabin, deep within the woods, only to foolishly release the forces of darkness. Extreme gore, violence and a touch of comedy all come together as the friends try to survive a night besieged by the evil dead…
