A couple of weeks back, we hopped on down to Black Dog Ballroom for a bit of lunch. I hadn’t been there for a little while, and there was something on the new menu which had me all excited…
See they have a whole section of the menu dedicated solely to fries. Of course, you have your seasoned house fries and sweet potato fries which will never let you down, or the more adventurous spam or halloumi fries, but if you cast your eyes down to the loaded fries section of the menu, you will find something quite beautiful.
You can completely pick and mix with the loaded fries. First, you choose your size; individual or sharing. Then your fry; waffle, thick cut, sweet potato, house and then the fun begins.
Choose one of seven toppings to make your fires completely yours. There are twenty-eight, yes twenty-eight different combinations for you to get involved with- so pretty much endless amounts of fun. We tried a few combinations and have given them a little review:
Thick Cut with The Northern: What a great place to start. Who doesn’t love chips, cheese and gravy? I suppose if you are posh you could call it poutine, but this dish is just so loveably simple at Black Dog. I think the thick cut fries are an excellent choice for this one and they are as robust and hardy as the dish itself. I could eat this every day into forever.
Sweet Potato with Sloppy Joe: I’m not normally a huge fan of sweet potato fries, so I had to be super careful about what I topped them with. I feel they go well with a Tex-Mex vibe, so we chose beef chilli, tomato, with melted jack cheese, sour cream and chive. It sort of reminded me of nachos which is a great thing in my book. Top marks.
Waffle Cut with Pizza: These fries are topped with pepperoni, rich tomatoes pizza sauce and plenty of grated mozzarella. The waffle cut fries are a good choice for the pizza topping as they are easy to scoop up all the cheesy goodness and they have the benefit of being an all-in-one mouthful of pizza.
House Fries Peppercorn Steak: The thin fries were topped with roasted steak and a creamy peppercorn sauce- this one is like a steak dinner all in one. The house fries are great, but you might want to use a fork to avoid a sticky, saucy mess.
The possibilities are (almost) endless, so get yourself down there and get involved.
