Assiette de Fruit de Mer at Randall & Aubin

If you ever want to sit back and pretend you don’t live in the city which is home to such delicacies as the pie barm (google it), then some proper good seafood might just do the trick.

Randall & Aubin, the trendy Anglo-French bistro, is relatively new on the Manchester food scene, but man, is she forging a name for herself. If you are mad about fish, crazy about champagne or merely a gastronome who fancies a little sophistication from time to time, then this stunning restaurant might be for you.

The shimmering interior is Parisian luxury married with 1970’s glamour complete with disco balls and copious bottles of champagne. The restaurant is elegant, sophisticated yet somehow modest with friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff.

If you want to sample the best of Randall & Aubin in one foul swoop, then I would have to recommend the assiette de fruit de mer. The platter comes in at £25 and is ideal for sharing between two as a start to your meal. So what does it contain? Three oysters one French, one Irish, one English (sounds like the beginning of a Dad joke) as well as king prawns, crab, little pink prawns, cockles, mixed clams, mussels, scallops and whelks.

Served over ice and with all the accompaniments you could need, and one of the best pots of mayo I’ve ever tasted, the Assiette is a fish lover’s paradise. What’s more is the freshness and sustainability ethos if the restaurant. Randall and Aubin are highly conscious of the need to source UK seafood that is sustainably caught, from stocks that are responsibly managed and from fisheries where complete traceability is evident.
