Mary-Ellen McTague and Ruth Allan to host Simien Mountain Disco, their first joint event to fund-raise for Action Against Hunger.

Simien Mountain Disco, a fundraising event set-up by The Real Junk Food Project chef Mary –Ellen McTague and food critic Ruth Allan, is set to take place this Saturday, 13th August, in the run-up to their trek to Ethiopia with Action Against Hunger this October.

Taking place at First Chop Brewing Arm in Salford from 2pm until late, there will be a BBQ hosted by Mary-Ellen, with a guest appearance from Fazenda, and a disco with a strong-line up of DJs including Greg Thorpe (Drunk At Vogue), Craig Potter (Elbow), Marylin Misandry, Pasta Paul, Tobin Lochrie, Sarah Walters and Darren Taylor (Good Afternoon). There will also be live sets from Mano McLoughlin at 5.30pm and Liam Frost at 7pm, as well as a raffle and karaoke.

Action Against Hunger is an international humanitarian organisation committed to ending child hunger. The organisation works to save the lives of malnourished children while providing communities with access to safe water and good nutrition in nearly 50 countries worldwide.

Ruth and Mary-Ellen join a group of the North’s finest chefs, restaurateurs and hospitality industry experts to face one of their biggest challenges to date, volunteering to trek through the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia, in a bid to raise over £100,000 for Action Against Hunger.

The Ethiopia Trek Team also includes; Adam Tomlinson, Manager of Sticky Walnut, Andrew Nutter, Chef Owner of Nutters and the Bird at Birtle, Daisy Whitehouse, Managing Director of Down at the Social, Frances Atkins, Chef and Co-owner of The Yorke Arms, Jobe Ferguson, Co-owner of Black Dog Ballroom, The Liars Club Group and TNQ Restaurant and Bar, Jon Kirby, Owner of Beautiful Drinks, Liam McKay, Executive Chef at The Chef’s Table, Lisa Allen, Executive Head Chef at Northcote, Paddy Smith, Co-owner of Red and Blue Restaurants, Ross Mackenzie, Co-owner of Black Dog Ballroom and The Liars Club Group, Steven Burgess, Chef Owner of catering company Rhubarb & Custard, Tomas Maunier, Sales and Marketing Director at Fazenda restaurants and Vince Margiotta, Owner of Vincenzo’s Italian restaurant, launching in Liverpool in September, and hospitality consultancy business Vmar Ltd.

Tickets for the Simien Mountain Disco are limited and are available to buy online, at a price of £12 plus £1.33 booking fee. It will take place at the First Chop Brewing Arm – Trinity Way, Salford, M3 5EN at 2pm, Saturday, 13th August.

The funds raised will go towards Action Against Hunger’s work to provide malnourished children with healthier futures in countries including Ethiopia, South Sudan, Nigeria, Nepal and Somalia.

Action Against Hunger has been present in Ethiopia since 1985, helping families through severe droughts including the recent drought resulting from El Nino, which is affecting an estimated 400,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
