It’s Fiz & Chips As Corrie Stars Cotton On To Selfridges’ Project Ocean

Selfridges’ Project Ocean initiative was given a star-studded boost over the Bank Holiday weekend in Manchester when Coronation Street stars Jennie McAlpine (Fiz Stape) and Anthony Cotton (Sean Tully) dropped by  to sample some free fish snacks at the Exchange Square branch of the famous department store. The pair of actors also pledged their support for Project Ocean, Selfridges’ charitable campaign which focuses on sustainable fishing and ocean conservation.

In addition to the stars from the street there were a team of funky Project Ocean frogmen (complete with flippers and snorkels) patrolling the pavements and store throughout the day, whilst Selfridge’s staff, all dressed especially in blue for the occasion, were on hand to distribute Selfridges’ free Project Ocean Fish Guide which highlights a number of endangered species that consumers should ideally avoid and makes suggestions of alternative, more sustainable choices.

Other staff in the vicinity were wearing a range of specially created slogan tee-shirts, designed by legendary designer Katherine Hamnett, that can be purchased in store in aid of the campaign.

Project Ocean is an inspiring initiative that challenges the public to imagine a world with “no more fish in the sea”.  It is spearheaded by Selfridges’ Creative Director Alannah Weston, working in partnership with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), and is backed by over 25 charities and agencies including Greenpeace and the World Wide Fund for Nature.

It is both a celebration of the oceans and a forum for conservationists to issue an urgent public wake-up call to address issues of sustainability, overfishing and marine protection, and features a range of fashion, food and fundraising elements deployed by all its stores until June 12th.

Selfridges’ Exchange and Trafford branches are also demonstrating their commitment to the cause via their restaurants, bars and food hall which have all introduced an ongoing responsible sourcing policy and a complete ban on endangered species. They have also launched a range of sustainable fish-based dishes that are already proving a huge hit with diners.
In addition shoppers can download a free smartphone app that include recipes from top chefs, a sustainable fish and seafood restaurant guide developed by Fish2Fork, and additional Project Ocean information and content.

Selfridges’ Exchange and Trafford branches have also helped fund the creation of a marine reserve in the Philippines on a unique double barrier reef, creating a safe haven for endangered fish.

Manchester shoppers, and the general public, will be able to contribute to the setting up of similar marine reserves around the world by donating directly to Project Ocean and through the purchase of Project Ocean campaign ribbons, bracelets, bags and tea towels that are available in store.
