Even with their doors shut, the team at Band on the Wall are still looking for ways in which to entertain us Mancs and offer up their always impressive range of world music direct to our houses.
So this week they’re introducing ‘Live-ish’ gigs and top ‘Picks from the Vault’ – ways which will hopefully make this period of isolation go quicker and allow us to have a little fun during this difficult period.
Live-ish Gigs
These live sessions will be plucked from the Band on the Wall archive of some of their favourite recordings from gigs gone by. These full clips will allow us to watch the gigs as they happened – even though it’s not happening right now.
They’ll be kicking the series off this Friday 27th March at 7pm with Azymuth.
Continually pushing the boundaries of jazz, funk, electronic music and disco, as expressed through their signature samba swing, the Brazilian mavericks Azymuth have recreated the energy of those spellbinding seventies’ sessions which would launch them into international recognition and confirm their status as one of Brazil’s most successful bands.
Picks from the Vault
A selection of artist snippets from the team at Band on the Wall that you might not know (and some you definitely will). Ensuring you get your music fix during this time, they’ll be presenting acts from the past in all their glory – starting with the legendary – Sun Ra Arkestra.
Sun Ra was one of the greatest and least known jazz artists of the last four decades. Composer, bandleader, pianist, poet and Afro-Futurist philosopher, he founded his Arkestra to take jazz into unexplored territories – his style drawing simultaneously on black vaudeville, modern dance, Egyptian cosmology, Eastern philosophy, surrealism, kitsch, and the Bible.
The Arkestra performs today led by alto saxophonist and long-time Ra collaborator Marshall Allen. The mischievous brass blasts and the grooves keep rolling, as the big band – fully dressed, as usual, in space capes with a hint of Ancient Egypt – takes off once again in a joyous burst of tightly organised madness.
