Be honest, have you broken your New Year’s resolutions already? Many of us have more than once! It can be very difficult to motivate yourself to eat well and exercise in the winter months, but the New Year can be the perfect start of your new routine. Living in and around a big city, people often don’t have much time or energy for exercise due to work, some finds it too expensive – all common reasons that people find it difficult  to work out. If you can’t find time to work out during the week and you work in the city centre, Pure Gym based in Spinningfields is open 24/7.

With a spacious, clean environment, classes, helpful instructors and state of the art equipment they are perfect for busy individuals to exercise before work, after work or even on their lunch break from only £15.99 a month. For those with a larger budget, gyms such as Fitness First include summer fitness deals and guest passes for friends. Remember, often when you enquire about personal training you will receive a free session and a work out plan catered to your needs!

Working out at the gym not for you? Don’t let that put you off, there are plenty of ways to exercise in groups. Manchester’s Arndale shopping centre have teamed up with the NHS to hold a Mall Walk every Thursday at 9am. With friendly NHS experts on hand every week to offer advice and support, the Mall Walks are perfect for people of any age or level of fitness. Each lap of the mall takes approximately ten minutes and continues for an hour, and you can always relax with a cup of tea in one of the centre’s many cafes afterwards.

Every Saturday at 9am a 5km run is held at Platt Fields Park, entirely organised by volunteers it is a fun, free way to meet likeminded people and run for both enjoyment and fitness.

If that isn’t enough to motivate you, try setting yourself a goal, make it worthwhile and raise some money for charity. On Sunday 1st of May Cancer Research are holding their night time walking marathon Shine, where you can choose to walk 26.2 or 13.1 miles to raise awareness and funds. On May 15th Bupa hold their Great Manchester Run, which is becoming one of the biggest 10K races in the UK. Over 20,000 runners pass some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Manchester United stadium, Old Trafford.

Running, taking classes or going to the gym with other people will make exercise seem less of a chore, and you will have the support you need to keep going throughout the year. Stay positive, don’t give up and you will surely see results!
