A celebration of the unsung heroes keeping Manchester’s underground urban music scene bubbling hot.
On Saturday 16th March, Beeswaxx is curating a night that scratches the surface of this hub of talent erupting from our city. There will be live PA’s, visuals and DJ-sets throughout the night – they’re keeping the price to a minimum and the energy to a maximum so don’t sleep on this one!
Lineup included HMD, Katbrownsugar, Joey Bricks and Inka…
R&B virtuoso HMD is Manchester’s hidden vocal treasure when it comes to soulful smooth hooks, intelligent bars and infectious rhythms. After a flurry of shows in the big smoke, he’s been back in the rainy city grafting hard on an exhibition representing Somali-Manc culture and the history of his roots – currently up at Manchester Central Library. During his recent interview on the Beeswaxx show (MCR Live) he expressed how his brain is now firmly back on the music game. With new productions on the horizon it’s the ideal time to have him bless the stage with a long overdue hometown performance – we’re expecting some exclusives in the set so don’t miss this one.
Another multi-talented (not so hidden anymore) gem making serious noise out of Old Trafford is Katbrownsugar. As well as being a highly skilled DJ/selector fusing hip-hop, neo-soul, R&B, afro beats and future sounds – she rides the airwaves as if they were her own with stunning radio residencies on NTS, MCR Live and Reform Radio. Mixcloud were quick to recognise, declaring her ‘Rising Star 2018’ and ‘Best Hiphop/R&B/Afro beats show’ in their annual awards. On the night she will be gracing us with her secret weapon – her voice – performing a live PA on the Night & Day stage. Another set you would be a fool to miss.
Hot on the heels of Kat’s ‘Rising Star’ Mixcloud award, Joey Bricks took home ‘Listeners Choice’ in the very same category, meaning only one thing – this guy can select and the people know it. His DJ sets are truly unique and are guaranteed to catch you out as he blurs the lines between genres from opposite ends of the electronic spectrum. One of two wizards behind A Broken Camarilla’s beats; Joey’s production style is deep and atmospheric with old school infusions from, but not limited to, the worlds of garage and hip-hop. Joey shut the dancefloor down when he played for us back in January and we expect nothing less this time around.
Based in South Manchester, Inka is an inspired DJ/producer who has been turning heads in the UK underground for a while, mesmerising dancefloors up and down the country with his unmistakeable selections. From the studio, he manages to bend and fuse sub-low frequencies with his own unique influences from the worlds of hip-hop, soul and ambience, creating a trademark Inka-style. Expect to be taken on a journey through sound at his shows, as he sets his own unique productions alongside some of the deepest cuts around. Since Inka’s earlier collaboration with IAMDDB on track ‘Leaned Out’ (almost at 10 million views), his debut album ‘Waveydon Ballads’ was a sell-out success with tapes being shipped all over the world. This international recognition has led the way for Inka to work his magic over-seas in locations such as Munich and Croatia @ Outlook Festival. His focus and passion for his trade suggests this is just the beginning. The Beeswaxx resident and co-founder has plenty of exclusives to test out so be sure to catch his set on the night.
Throughout the night Beeswaxx residents will be keeping the vibes alive on the 1s & 2s delivering funk, garage, hip-hop, disco and more – so get down early!
