Following a journey spanning two years, Future Sound of Mzansi reflects South Africa’s cultural landscape, 20 years into its democracy. A chief vehicle of this exploration is electronic music, a surprising staple of South African popular culture.

The film considers the past, present and future of the scene and its multiple subgenres, presented through the eyes of Spoek Mathambo, an internationally acclaimed artist.

Still a country steeped in poverty, crime, and injustice, South Africans party like their lives depend on it. The groove is thick and infectious – and they give themselves to it. From the sounds of deep house and glitch hop; kwaito-house to township tech; super fast khawuleza and shangaan electro, there’s no stopping the growing movement.

Expect screen features from an exciting range of emerging electronic music artists including Aero Manyelo; Black Coffee; Christian Tiger School; Felix Laband; DJ Mujava; DJ Spoko; and many more.

Future Sound of Mzansi is directed by Spoek Mathambo and Lebo Rasethaba of Egg Films, and produced by Black Major.

Following the screening, there will be a Q+A with director and South African producer/rapper, Spoek Mathambo.

Afterparty:
How could they put on a film about music without celebrating it afterwards? They’re continuing the night with a party featuring DJ sets from Spoek Mathambo and Bacchanal Ronin. Come prepared for 4 hours of South African House, Bacardi House, Kwaito House and hyper-speed Shangaan Electro style. They’re bringing South Africa to Manchester in full force…
