Master of the remix, Cyril Hahn is making the kind of up for it, game changing edits you might’ve expected from Soulwax back in the early noughties – only with all house bounce you could dream of.
Think echoes of the minimal Jamie XX sound, the funk of the likes of MK and Scottie Deep and you’re getting somewhere close. This is RnB made epic, huge club tunes imbued with soul.
Based in Vancouver (the home of Grimes) and originally from Bern in Switzerland, Cyril is all about the emotion, citing cult alt songwriter Will Oldham/ Bonnie Prince Billy as his biggest influence. On these dates he will be previewing forthcoming original material as well as his famous reworks (Solange / Destiny’s Child / Jessie Ware / Mariah Carey/ HAIM) as part his debut European tour.
His Solange rework, Losing You, was Song of the Day in i-D and his version of Destiny’s Child’s Say My Name has caught the attention of over 2m YouTube viewers. No 1 on Hype Machine, it was selected as the final track by Diplo for his BBC Radio 1 mix show, and posted as a favourite by The XX on their fan page, while BBC Radio1’s Annie Mac touted the record as one of her addictive tracks of 2012. He started the year with a boogie down mix for Rob da Bank, while plans for 2013 include a tour and working with vocalist Gabrielle Aplin on future sounds.
