Yoko Ono invites you to join the opening event for this years Manchester International Festival!

For the opening event of Manchester International Festival 2019, Yoko Ono has issued an invitation to the people of Manchester and beyond to come together for ‘bells for peace’.

Manchester International Festival (MIF) is the world’s first festival of original, new work and special events, staged every two years in Manchester. MIF launched in 2007 as an artist-led festival presenting new works from across the spectrum of performing arts, visual arts and popular culture.

Yoko Ono has been among the world’s most renowned and respected artists for over half a century. From her early bed-in collaborations with John Lennon in 1969 to her ongoing War is Over campaign. Ono has boldly communicated her commitment to social justice throughout her career, creating works that blur the boundaries between art, politics and society.

Bells for Peace is the opening event for MIF19 – and it aims to encourage everyone in Manchester to gather together in Cathedral Gardens and send a message of peace to the world. From individuals joining bell making workshops to make or customize their own bell to ring at the event, to choir members creating vocal responses to the work, to those who just want to turn up on the day – all are invited.

The free event in Cathedral Gardens, will see thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds take part in a people’s orchestra and chorus that will share their stories and ring and sing out for peace.

Alongside Bells for Peace, MIF are also issuing a call out for people to take part in several other new shows, full details of which will be announced at the full MIF19 program which comes out on the 7th March.
