The Big Bad Mouse, so he does exist!
The live show adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Alex Schefflers The Gruffalos Child is on a 4 week visit to The Lowry – not to be missed! The story follows the Gruffalos child as she tip toes out of the Gruffalo cave into the deep dark wood embarking on her hunt for the big bad mouse. The production is brought to life by Tall Stories, a registered charity which tours the world with its exciting storytelling theatre.
This was my first theatre trip with my almost 2 year old, and admittedly I was worried if she would sit still for an hour (the recommended age being 3+). I was so wrong – One of her favourite books was brought to life with a dynamic mix of comedy, dance, song and some very impressive sound effects from the actors, my daughter was captivated with mouth wide open for the whole show!
The story features the familiar narrative from the book, with a lot of nods to the original Gruffalo. There was an array of added extra dialogue, jokes, and a catchy dance along sound track, available to purchase afterwards. There was never a dull moment, the 3 actors were so energetic. Parent friendly jokes kept the older audience members amused, particularly the portrayal of snake – so flamboyant, (who knew?) I’ll be reading his lines a bit differently next time!
Of course, as we all know, the big bad mouse really does exist, and lived up to his scary reputation. The 3 year old next to me hiding into his Dads shoulder, my 2 year old still gazing, mouth wide open…
