Even though you might think I’m overacting there, The Witches truly is frightening. After watching it I had to sleep with the landing light on and my bedroom door open up until I was around 28 years old, and still now I have to bomb it up the stairs to my room if I’m home alone.

The fear comes from two bits. One bit is where all of the witches are in their convention in the hotel and they start taking off their wigs and shoes. Even the typically stunning Angelica Houston is transformed into the hideous Queen Witch and as an overactive 11-year-old – this was all too much.

The absolute most frightening bit though is right at the beginning. The main character’s grandma is relaying a story about a young girl in her village who was trapped in a painting in her house for her whole life, slowly growing old and then disappearing altogether when she died. Horrible.

Anyway, personal trauma over and Make A Scene are heading to the Z-Arts Centre in Hulme for their next interactive and immersive screening. Even though it’s scary, the afternoon film showing will be accompanied by many family friendly activities and food, including chocolate, potions, Afternoon Tea themed food, cocktails, mocktails, sweets, cakes, crafting, workshops and a boot camp on how to spot real-life witches!

Families are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl characters. You can take part in our mouse mask-making and magical potions workshops. For the adult evening screening, fancy dress is encouraged, and the worst witches will win some free cocktails.

There will be two screenings, one for families at 2.30pm (ages 8+) and an adult-only showing at 7.30pm

This event is supported by Superbia – Manchester Pride’s year-round calendar of cultural events.
