We sat down with award-winning Manchester chef Mary-Ellen McTague in her stunning new restaurant The Creameries for a chat about food, food and more food.

We were in The Creameries in the first few weeks of it’s opening, and whilst there, I chatted with Mary-Ellen about the concept, her menu, the history of the building and everything in-between. No really, I mean everything – even pickled onion Monster Munch and mushrooms grown in garages.

While we chatted we sampled some of her delicious dishes like fresh oysters, cockles cooked in butter, cider and wild garlic, and a plate of local cheese with candied walnuts that I still think about to this day.

Mary-Ellen is a big advocate of eating locally, and so you can expect her menu to transform daily. Every element of each dish is as local as physically possible and she also pays some serious attention to food history at The Creameries. There really isn’t anything quite like it here in Manchester.

Although I was utterly in awe of the food, we did cover a few slightly more serious topics such as women in the food industry, Michelin stars, her time working with Heston Blumenthal and where she likes to eat – spoiler – it’s Hawksmoor.
