Taking a completely different approach to Indian cuisine, the husband and wife team behind Potyo in Wilmslow have created a range of dishes inspired by the Malabar of India – the country’s diverse southwestern shoreline.
The area comprises the wettest regions of southern India, from some of its highest peaks to Kuttanad, also known as The Rice Bowl of Kerala – the lowest altitude area.
It’s home to the famous Kerala Backwaters, the biologically diverse interconnected canals, lakes and rivers, as well as 525 miles of stunning, wild coastline.
It’s here where Jason and Milena Almedia have taken inspiration from for their ‘Coastal’ Indian restaurant in the heart of Wilmslow, a pair who have some pretty extensive restaurant experience already – both working in the likes of Gusto, Australasia, Chaophraya and Red’s True Barbecue over the years.
Local Wilmslow residents, they’ve always wanted to bring something different to the neighbourhood, and with Jason’s roots in Goa, and travels across the country – Coastal Indian was the natural choice.
Set over two floors in the old King & Allen tailor shop on Church Street, ‘Potyo’ actually means “greedy boy” in Kontani – the native language of Goa.
Goan’s are well-known for their love of food, drink, music and sossegado (relaxed) lifestyle, and it’s this spirit that continues through the restaurant – from the light and fresh dining room with whitewashed walls and wicker chairs, to the diverse menu of unique dishes.
On the menu you’ll find coastal sharing plates and curry bowls, alongside signature dishes such as Meen Polichottu (£19.95); roasted fish wrapped in a banana leaf with Konkan coastal masala.
There’s also Thattukada Steak (£18.95); marinated rump steak served with pan-fried onions and potatoes, and Roasted Chicken Cafreal (£15.95); marinated for 36 hours with coriander, house spice blend and served with Indian bread.
There’s also their ‘Coastal Curry Bowls’ including the classic Goan Prawn Curry (£12.95), Boatman Fish Curry (£12.95) and the Pork Collar Vindaloo (£11.95). You’ll also find a few vegetarian options, such as the Channa Ros (£9.95); a chickpea curry made with roasted coconut gravy and tempered with red mustard seeds.
You’ll also find a menu of Sharing Plates, a kind of ‘Indian Tapas’ which includes Peri Peri Baby Squids (£7.95), Crispy Okra (£5.50), Prawn 65 (£8.95) and Kori Ghee Chicken (£6.95).
There’s something for everyone here, and the dishes are unique, creative and it’s unlikely you’ll find most of these anywhere else in the area.
