Returning to Chapel Street once again for 2023, Sounds From the Other City has released the first wave of acts storming the pubs, industrial estates and often overlooked institutions across Greater Manchester’s ‘other city’ of Salford.
Taking place over the May bank holiday weekend, the festival combines the weird and wonderful of Salford’s underground arts scene with global superstars – previously bringing the likes of Slowthai, Hannah Peel, Black Midi, SNEAKS and more to the city.
For 2023, the festival continues its legacy of securing a melting pot of avant-garde emerging talent, announcing the dark experimental CURRENTMOODGIRL as part of its line-up, alongside French psych pop giants Hello Maud who will play in the confines of the picturesque St Philips church.
Wigan’s Brown Brogues, a two-piece garage rock band you might already be familiar with, are also on the bill this year, returning after seven years out of the music biz. They’ll be joined by other live performances from KOOL KID, 96back, Honeyglaze and more.
Alongside the mix of avant garde on-stage shows, DJs will carry the Sounds From the Other City party into the evening with Gracie T taking over Salford boozer The New Oxford with a set of consecutive, certified bangers. Elsewhere Katbrownsugar will bring her sweet vibes with a set encompassing hiphop, RnB, and alt-soul to appreciative ears at Porta. And the festival wouldn’t be what it is without Islington Mill, in which you can catch the ferocious Arch Femesis – a band that blur the line between punk and electro.
Each year the festival also invites a number of selectors from Greater Manchester and beyond to host and programme their very own stages. The promoters for 2023 include local legends Now Wave, as well as Strange Days, Hey! Manchester and Band on the Wall, who will be joined by festival first timers The Beatriarchy, Alphaville x FAIR PLAY and Sayin? x NIAMOS x Mas o Menos.
Sounds From the Other City has been a firm underground favourite since 2005, delivering an unstoppable programme of talent in some of the city’s most influential small venues. It returns to Chapel Street this Spring with its off-kilter beauty and badge as one of the best all day festivals in the country.
