Historically, when people think of Indian food and south Manchester they immediately jump to Rusholme, and the Curry Mile. The nickname for the stretch of Wilmslow Road between Whitworth and Platt Fields parks since the early-1980s, we’d argue that many of the finest restaurants serving cuisine inspired by the subcontinent are actually found a few miles down the street, beyond the bright neons of the city’s most famous specialist dining district. Take Moon, for example, an unfussy but beloved establishment in the heart of Withington, the team here have been filling hungry bellies since 1992.
That longevity tells you everything there is to know about the quality of what’s happening in the kitchen. As does the fact this place has won a number of awards, regularly ranking on the UK’s finest curry house lists. More so, the tandoori chef behind the scenes is a world record holder for most naan breads made in one hour, managing to bake a staggering 640 in 60 minutes. Of course, speed isn’t everything, and Moon excels not just at efficiency but incredible flavours, using only the freshest ingredients and heritage cooking methods to offer a truly authentic experience for diners and take-away customers.
In terms of popular options, the team are quick to point out that classics such as the sizzling Lamb Chop or Chicken Tikka always make a big impression. Meanwhile, Chef’s Specialities such as the Makhani — butter, tomatoes, gravy, and cream — and Achari — never fail to impress. Those aside, we’d also recommend the Continental (four pieces of lamb tikka, four chicken tikka, two king prawn), Paneer Chilli, and Prawn Saag. Then again, you really can’t go wrong with any of the Karahi, Balti, or Mix dishes, either. Oh, and don’t forget to try some of the legendary starters, and bring your own booze, if that floats your boat.
