So there’s a night this Saturday where a bloke called Rainy Miller will be playing some music. Imagine being called Rainy. You’d be gutted. The only kids in school who have a worse time than you would be Steve Drizzle and Samantha Overcast. That’s it. That’s all I’ve got to say about this – mostly because that’s all I know about it. If I don’t understand things I try and make a joke and invariably end up looking like an idiot. Pretty much like now.
Poetry & Supper with Toria Garbutt and Mary-Ellen McTague at The Creameries

Poetry and fit food? Errrr – alright then you’ve twisted me arm. The Creameries are continuing their brilliant run of events this week with a bit of a ditty from legendary poet Toria Garbutt. There’s not much better to do with your Sunday night to be fair, Heartbeat hasn’t been on the telly for around 15 years and if anyone is watching X Factor then they don’t deserve the finer things in life. It should be a top night so get on down and get involved. Mary-Ellen in her infinite wisdom has created a bespoke menu for the evening, inspired by the themes of Toria’s poetry.
The Whisky Festival @ The Whiskey Jar
Sunday 28th April
The world famous Whisky Festival is back at The Whiskey Jar this Sunday and once again there will be over 450 bottles of the stuff knocking about for you to try. They have whiskies from all over the world, including the obligatory Scottish, Irish and Japanese ones alongside a lovely drop from Iceland and a little obscure one from Spain. Alongside the whiskey will be live music, food, cocktails and even a mini whisky shop offering up plenty of the brown stuff to buy. (Whiskey not heroin). Tickets are only a fiver and I guarantee you’ll be hammered by 4pm.
Richard III at HOME

Hi, Kate Tighe jumping in here because Ben Brown has left his Things to Do late this week and needed a hand. Anyway, Richard III is on this at HOME on Tuesday in a revolutionary production directed by Headlong Associate Artist John Haidar. Strap in for tale of deceit, manipulation, murder and violence of one of Shakespeare’s most infamous villains.
Educating Rita at The Lowry

If you’ve ever seen the movie, or heard the story from a fella down at the pub – Educating Rita is the story of an old (pretty fit) woman who decides to go back to college to learn a few things and ends up falling in love with a silver fox called Frank. OBL Beer x VICE Pub Quiz

Finest favourites Nanny Banton and Chimpo will be hosting another one of their mental Pub Quizzes at Hold Fast this week, and you should probably expect some proper mental rounds which will make you re-evaluate your life choices and/or make you piss yourself. These boys don’t mess about when it comes to an enjoyable quiz so if you’re looking for a good time (alongside loads of beer giveaways and mint prizes) then you canne go wrong. I’ll see you there – I’m gonna win it.
Japan Fest at Manchester Academy

There are a million things that I have to be thankful of the Japanese people for and if I had to choose 3 it would be 1) Pokemon 2) fancy toilets and 3) samurai. Another thing that we should all be thankful for is this Japan Festival at Manchester Academy – featuring everything you could ever think of from the weird island over in the far east. There will be loads of food dishes to try, alongside plenty of traditional Japanese crafts and endeavours – including that origami stuff.
Sun Ra Arkestra & Pete Rock at Gorilla

I once went to watch Sun Ra Arkestra at Gorilla and it was spectacularly and wonderfully bat-shit crazy, complete with more instruments than the Moscow orchestra, dancing, spaceships and what can only be described as a fully functioning musical conga line through the crowd. This week they’ll all be heading back to Gorilla for hopefully more of the same and the lovely addition of Pete Rock.
MCR Student Social

The best thing about being a student is the free cheeseburger that you get with every Extra Value Meal at Maccies. Simple. Nothing beats it. Another positive is that a bunch of people in the city get together twice a week to put on the Manchester Student Social, a chance for all that NUS lot to save a bit of bunce in the establishment of the the city. Basically the whole of Market Street will be transformed into a student haven of discounts and that. Perfick.
The Refuge Electrik Weekender with Pikes Takeover

The one time that I went to Ibiza last year, first time ever, the island chewed me up and spat me out. It was a quick and easy transaction really. I presented my person, Ibiza found it severely lacking and destroyed me. My wallet was gone, my dignity was in tatters and I found myself on a park bench at 3am wondering where the hell I was. In an ideal world though I’d have been in Pikes – legendary White Isle venue and a bunch of beauties who will be taking over The Refuge weekender this coming May Day Bank Holiday. If I ever attended a Social Media seminar on how to improve engagement, I’d come out with a couple of fool proof tricks. The first one would be to mention GIN. That always gets people’s attention online. Next up would be to say something about JAZZ – because everyone loves a bit of jazz right? Well, combine the two and you’re on your way to creating the new Lad Bible and it seems that 4 Sisters Gin Distillery know their stuff because they’ve got an event this week that ticks ALL the boxes.
