The Refuge 3rd Birthday
Saturday 5th October
Will this be the biggest party of the weekend? Yes. Will this be the biggest party of the week? Yes. Will this be the biggest party of the month? Probably yeah. You know where I’m going with this – The Refuge is 3 years young and so they’re having a party to end all parties this Saturday. Taking over the Courtyard, the Public Bar and the Basement, there’s a full day and night of DJ’s and live music including the incredible Homoelectric. It’s all free, it starts at 2pm and I’ll see you there.
Breakfast Club with Surco
Saturday 5th October
Something for all you absolute mad-heads out there. A 4am ‘til late afterparty over at Night People this Saturday morning courtesy of Breakfast Club. While we’re all waking up, putting SM:TV on the telly and scoffing a big bowl of Frosties, this lot will be hours deep into a massive fucking rave – hosted by the always impressive gang at Surco. The event is licensed until 7am so after then you’ll probably either just have to have water or head to the nearest Wetherspoons and carry on.
The Economist Open Future Festival 2019
Saturday 5th October
We’re not usually a political lot over here at Finest Towers, and we’re certainly not Economists, especially considering I spectacularly failed BOTH Economics modules at University, so it’s a wonder why this event is even in here. Well, first of all, I know that there’s a lot of talk and debate at the moment around economics – especially with the Big ‘B’ hanging over everyone’s head like the Sword of Damocles. And so I thought that people might be interesting in a day of debate and discussion – featuring many prominent figures and experts from a wide spectrum of fields. Yeah?
OBL Beer x VICE Pub Quiz
Sunday 6th October
The gruesome twosome – Nanny Banton and Chimpo – have moved on from The Deaf Institute and The Liars Club and are now heading on over to student (and my) favourite The Courtyard for another one of their brilliant Old Blue Last x VICE Pub Quizzes. These things usually get pretty messy, pretty weird and a lot of fun so get yourself down and try to WIN some of their prizes. With it being an event run by people who make beer – if you don’t get cheap and/or free beers at some point – kick off.
Curtains @ Palace Theatre
From Tuesday 8th October
A new musical now, starring everyone’s favourite panel show attendee Jason Manford as a detective looking to see just WHO DONE IT. It’s a murder mystery musical where none of the cast or even crew are safe from suspicion – sort of like playing Cluedo with your family at home while listening to a bit of Bonnie Langford. It’s by the creators of Chicago and Cabaret and both of them are brilliant so this should be too right? It seems they only want musicals beginning with the letter ‘C’ too so look out for their next one ‘Cistern’. (It’s about toilets).
Quingo at Electrik Box in Hatch
Wednesday 9th October
Another quiz here for you but instead of absolute debauchery and carnage this one should be a much calmer, but no less fun affair. That’s because this week sees the introduction of the brilliant ‘Quingo’ to Electrik Box at Hatch. What’s QUINGO? Well, I’m glad you’ve asked because I’m going to spend the next two sentences describing it to you. It’s a quiz where you answer questions, like most quizzes, but then sprinkled throughout are little games of bingo. The prizes are trash but it’s a lot of fun and it’s FREE.
Hit & Run + The North Quarter presents Abnormal Sleepz LP Launch
Wednesday 9th October
Manchester rapper Abnormal Sleepz has signed to Amsterdam-based record label The North Quarter and to celebrate, the Hit & Run lot are putting on a massive album launch for him over at Mint Lounge this Wednesday. Sleepz will be performing his LP ‘Kaleidoscope’ in full alongside some Manchester legends in the form of MC DRS, Fox, Misha B and HMD. There’ll also be sets from Tobi Sunmola, Ab Sub, Konny Kon and hosting by Chunky. It’ll be a who’s who of Manchester talent so get yourself down if that’s your thing.
Get Out (+ Introduction)
Wednesday 9th October
I’m sure that most people who have seen Get Out think it’s a bloody brilliant film. Hard to actually categorise, it’s a horror, it’s a thriller, it’s a comedy, it’s a science fiction movie – at some points it’s even a romance film. All of these genres come together though to create a movie that has become an almost instant classic, and if you fancy watching it on the big screen again (for FREE) then this week sees Man Met put it on in their cinema on Oxford Road. It’ll be introduced by Dr Linnie Blake and Dr Sarah Ilott from the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies.
Cocktails in the City
Friday 11th October
Returning once again to the err… city is Cocktails in the City, a massive showcase of everything Manchester’s bars and restaurants have to show in terms of the wet stuff. The city’s bartenders, mixologists, cocktail experts and probably even a few glass collectors will descend upon Viadux (a new place just off Albert Square) for a 2-day drinks spectacular. You’ll find the excellent Science + Industry there, Wilderness Bar + Kitchen, Tattu, Speak in Code, Cottonopolis, Lind Tyger and many more – all showing off their skills and letting you sample some pretty weird shit.
Manchester Art Fair 2019
Friday 11th October
The Manchester Art Fair has been called “one of the largest and most ambitious art fairs in the UK” and is THE place to go if you’re looking to buy some paintings, sculpture, photography and prints, or if you just want to have a look around and check out all the pretty colours. There’ll be over 130 exhibitors showing off what they’ve got and pretty much every single thing is for sale – including the odd Banksy if you’re lucky. We’re giving away some FREE tickets (usually £5) at the moment too, just for Finest readers – click below to claim yours.
