While the cost of living crisis has hit most of us this year, there’s lots of people who need more help and support over the festive period, from heating homes to relying on food banks. There is a number of Manchester charities to support this Christmas, all of which are doing superb and tireless work for the city.
Lifeshare
Lifeshare is a voluntary organisation working across Manchester and Salford offering practical advice, support and information to vulnerable people. The charity also offers continued assistance to homeless people who need secure suitable accommodation to carry their lives forward.
The Pankhurst Trust
Formed in 2014, when The Pankhurst Trust and Manchester Women’s Aid joined forces, the trust provides vital support to those suffering domestic violence and abuse. The charity also runs The Pankhurst Centre, which is located at the former home of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst and her family. The house, at 62 Nelson Street, serves as a small museum and heritage centre, as well as a women’s centre and community space.
42nd Street
Based in Ancoats, 42nd Street’s work supports the mental health and emotional wellbeing of young people, offering inclusive and accessible, free services and opportunities. These include counselling sessions, online support, social action programmes and creative projects.
Coffee4Craig
Homeless charity Coffee4Craig was founded in 2013 after the death of co-founder Risha Lancaster’s brother Craig, who died of a heroin overdose in a Cardiff car park. Since then, the charity has evolved into a daily drop-in centre for the homeless in Manchester city centre. Based on Great Ducie Street, the charity offers hot food, support, medical assistance, cleaning facilities and crisis intervention.
The Proud Trust
Manchester-based LGBT+ youth charity The Proud Trust empowers young people to be proud of who they are and celebrate diversity. The charity carries out youth work across the North West, as well as one-to-one support and developing national training programmes for schools.
