Since the early 80s, Greg Wilson has been a figurehead of the North’s electronic music scene. He grew up in New Brighton on Merseyside, witnessing many a mobile disco from his childhood bedroom that sat directly above his family’s pub, and his career has taken him to the furthest corners of the global clubbing scene.
His record collection began with the sounds of Tamla Motown, Stax and Atlantic, which he acquired from his older siblings. At the age of 15, he started experimenting with DJing and began a local residency at The Chelsea Reach in 1965, where he remained until ‘77.
A few years later, he began DJing at the infamous Wigan Pier, where he played four nights a week and started to champion some of the earliest electronic records. In 1982, he presented regular mixes of the music he was playing in the clubs on Manchester’s Piccadilly Radio and these are still regarded as some of the most influential DJ sets to this day.
Wilson was also one of the Hacienda’s regular DJs who would pioneer the club’s first weekly dance music night and lay the groundwork for its influential Nude night, also held every Friday, which came to prominence in the mid-’80s with DJs Mike Pickering and Martin Prendergast.
His most recent remix credits have included Grace Jones, The XX, Groove Armada, Steve Mason and more.
