For just 10 Great British pounds you can get down to The Pen and Pencil for a fabulous lunch/brunch meal with a drink included. The menu is separated into brunch (served from 10 am) and lunch (served from 12 pm), both served until 4 pm.
There’s plenty of choice on each menu, the brunch spans from Kimchi bubble & squeak cakes to smoked mackerel with asparagus and french toast.
While for lunch there are all the classics you need; fish burger and the New Jersey burger plus a spiffing sweet potato curry and a charming grilled halloumi sandwich.
The Kimchi bubble and squeak pan-fried cakes contain spring onions, coriander and are served with fried eggs and spicy sriracha sauce.
It’s a light addition to the menu and the portion is a good size for your first meal of the day. Wash it down with a big old guzzle of coffee and I bet you’ll be set up for a proper good day.
The Reuben sandwich from the lunch menu includes slabs of sourdough bread with loads of sliced beef pastrami, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing and sauerkraut. This is another smaller dish from the menu and is a perfect light bite to satisfy those sarnie cravings.
The fish burger is a huge wedge of deep-friend breaded pollock served with shredded iceberg and a good drizzle of homemade tartare sauce. The burger is served on a sweet and soft brioche bun and plenty of crispy skin on fries.
Now, this is no discredit to The Pen & Pencil, in fact, quite the opposite…. cover this burger in lashings of vinegar and ketchup and you have a serious hangover cure. Trust me. I know from experience.
A veggie option from the lunch menu includes halloumi salad. Grilled slices of halloumi on a bed of fresh rocket, pomegranate pearls, caramelised walnuts and a dressing of a Dijon mustard.
