A new campaign has launched this weekend with the aim of celebrating black-owned businesses. Named Black Pound Day, it’s set to be a month-long event that encourages people to buy products or services from black-owned businesses in the UK.

The campaign has been set up by So Solid Crew member Swiss, who was inspired by Black Lives Matter movements following the murder of George Floyd by police in Minnesota.

The aim of the campaign is to increase support and awareness for black-owned businesses in the community, and a show of solidarity against the challenges faced by people every day.

So, how can you help?

Well, the movement encourages everyone to spend money with black-owned business this weekend, whether it’s a takeaway, delivery, local shop, art, music or community project – every little helps. It might be a bit difficult at the moment with us still being in lockdown but Manchester still has a raft of outstanding black-owned businesses about.

There are some online sources available to help with this, including UK Black Owned, Black Women’s Directory, the UK Black Writers Forum and the actual Black Pound Day website itself.

You might want to get something tasty from some of the city’s black-owned restaurants too, including our favourites Pull Up, Dougy’s, Kool Runnings, Jollof, Eat n Sweet, Lucky Mama’s, Marsei’s and the always excellent Caribbean Flavas on Chapel Street. We’re also a big fan of Cooking with Bubz on Instagram and Rads is a bit of a hidden gem in Ancoats you have to visit.

As a company we will continue to represent and promote the city’s black-owned businesses – not just this weekend with Black Pound Day but forever. In the near future you can expect more articles and round ups of the city’s best independent black-owned businesses.

If you are a black business owner and want to get in touch – you can do so here.
