Taking over the People’s History Museum this Saturday (20th August), Over Here Zine Fest is a not-for-profit event which focuses on showcasing the work of Black, Asian, POC and global majority zine makers, writers and activists.
The event was built upon a desire for accessible, self-sustaining alternative models for publishing, art, activism and collaboration in these particular communities. It’s organised by a group of Manchester-based people identifying as Black / Asian / POC / global majority and there’ll be zines, talks, workshops and spaces to collaborate throughout the day.
A zine is a magazine or booklet that’s produced independently, usually given away or swapped as a means to easily and cheaply share the work of a collective. On Saturday, the festival will showcase Brown Girls #2 – a zine that’s focused on life as a mixed race person, featuring rants, reviews, interviews, art and more.
Another zine available this weekend is Poor Lass #7, which has a racial theme, and is a collective zine written by working class people telling their stories through their own honest voice and What’s Your Flavour #2 will also be showcased, a zine all about crisps and how great they are!
Zines serve as an excellent way for marginalised people to share their story, a tool for activism, or to share passions, art and creativity. The work of Over Here Zine Fest draws on the long history of zines, political pamphlets and DIY practice made by people excluded from the mainstream.
It explores the history in order to lift up new voices, encourage collaboration, reclaim stories, and to make information and art accessible for certain communities. It does this by creating spaces to share, celebrate and archive work by people of colour.
