Janelle Monáe will play a three-night residency at Factory International’s Aviva Studios this summer, it’s been confirmed.

She’ll play the three exclusive dates on 2, 3 and 4 July in the Hall venue of the purpose-built arts centre.

The 10-times Grammy-nominated artist, singer, songwriter, actor and author was last seen in Manchester with a headline set for the Manchester International Festival, opening the 2019 biennial.

She was then set to appear at last year’s MiF, but had to cancel the show due to a scheduling conflict.

First emerging in the early 2000s, her demo album The Audition caught the ear of P Diddy and his Bad Boy label. Her debut album proper, The ArchAndroid, then landed in 2010 to widespread critical acclaim, and a Grammy nomination.

Since then, she’s released a concept EP series based on Fritz Lang’s groundbreaking sci-fi movie Metropolis, and albums The Electric Lady, Dirty Computer and last year’s The Age of Pleasure.

She’s also landed starring roles in movies including Hidden Figures, the biopic Harriet, the 2020 horror movie Antebellum and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion.

Tickets will go on sale to Factory International members at 10am on Wednesday 20 March and on general sale at 10am on Thursday 21 March.
