London’s Korean Film Festival has grown to become one of the most established showcases of Korean cinema across the globe.
Coming to an end in the capital just last week, the festival is now on a UK-wide tour that’s stopping off in Manchester this Sunday for a one-off screening of Hansan: Rising Dragon.
The blockbuster movie sees director, Kim Han-min depict the lead up and Admiral Yi’s explosive exploits during the Battle of Hansan Island, when he led a small fleet against a vast Japanese armada.
Released in July this year, the film ensues historic terror as leading actor Hai-il Park delivers a nail biting performance embodying the admiral figure of Yi Sun-Sin.
The gripping story depicted gives viewers an accurate glimpse into the Battle of Hansan Island that took place during the Japanese invasion of Korea. As the Korean forces fall into crisis, the admiral resorts to using his secret weapon, the dragon head ships known as geobukseon in order to change the tide of this epic battle.
The film will show at 3pm on Sunday as part of the festival’s tour. Celebrating its 17th year this year, the London Korean Film Festival screened from the 3rd – 17th November 2022, and featured over 35 films in leading venues around the capital.
Greatly evolving from humble beginnings to become one of the longest running and most respected festivals dedicated to Korean cinema, it has built a name via line-ups spanning the country’s most successful blockbusters to thought-provoking independents.
Across a variety of finely curated strands, LKFF aims to cater for general audiences to committed cinephiles, and everyone in between.
