Manchester United has launched a new sportswear collection in collaboration with legendary creative director Peter Saville.

The adidas garments are inspired by the close relationship between music and football, encapsulating Manchester’s rich cultural heritage and feature Saville’s distinctive colour wheel design from the iconic Blue Monday single – which famously lost the label money with each copy sold.

The project serves as an homage to the city in the 1980s, when both Manchester music and Manchester United enjoyed world-beating highs.

The collection consists of a t-shirt, long-sleeve t-shirt, track top, half zips and track pants, all featuring the classic design.

To further mark this, the club are releasing a limited-edition concept album with poet Dr John Cooper Clarke, featuring the Bard of Salford’s distinctive tones on one side, and undiluted audio of Old Trafford on the other, from United’s season-defining game against Sheffield Wednesday in 1992/93.

The first 25 purchases at Piccadilly Records will receive one of these exclusive records.

Saville shot to prominence as one of the co-founders and creative driving forces behind Factory Records, with Tony Wilson, Alan Erasmus and Martin Hannett, designing celebrated album covers for the likes of Joy Division, New Order and OMD.

Post-Factory, Saville, who was awarded the CBE in 2020, worked extensively in the world of fashion with designers like Jil Sander, John Galliano, Yohji Yamamoto and Stella McCartney, as well as brands like Burberry, Christian Dior and Calvin Klein.

It’s not the first time he’s dallied in the world of football either, designing the England team home shirt in 2010.
