In 2017, Brazilian-born Alex was selling her charming cupcakes at Bury Market when she was spotted and approached by a senior Debenhams staffer who happened to be passing en route to a store.

Keen for Alex to open a concession in the Trafford Centre and to introduce her cakes to the department store’s hungry customers, Alex’s Bakery was given its first permanent trading location thanks to the sweet tooth of this passing director.

Five successful years and thousands of cupcakes later, Alex has taken up residence in Great Northern’s independent business hub, Deansgate Mews, where the Alex’s Bakery will sit perfectly alongside artisanal neighbours, Dormouse Chocolates, Lion’s Den, Platzki and the upcoming Holy Grain.

Scrumptious sweet treats will be served alongside coffees, shakes and afternoon teas at the new location, with cupcakes starting at just £2 a pop.

Alex Furlan, founder of Alex’s Bakery said: “It has always been my dream to open my very own bakery, but I wasn’t sure if it would ever be possible. I started baking as a hobby for my family and friends until even friends of friends were asking for my cakes! We are absolutely thrilled that we have now found the perfect spot at the Great Northern and I can’t wait to open to the public and bake my favourite cakes from a place of my own.

“I have finally found my passion and every single cake or cupcake that I bake, I make with such pleasure and love, that I couldn’t even call it a job.”
