Bagels, who have their origin in the Jewish communities Eastern Europe in the 1600s, were brought over to Western Europe and America in the late 19th century. Since then, we have fallen in love with them and so have awarded them with their own day of world celebration.
11th December is ‘Have a Bagel Day’ where we are encouraged to grab one of those delicious chewy wonders and tuck into them any way we like.
Some people are classicists who might choose a humble spreading of butter or cream cheese. In some countries, like Holland, it would be chocolate spread and sprinkles, but here, here we want the real deal, and in Manchester, there is only one place we are going to get it.
Eat New York are the reigning kings of bagels, so when it comes to ‘Have a Bagel Day’, we really needn’t look much further. They take bagels seriously, choosing to stuff them with all manner of delights inspired by the Jewish delis in New York which are so famous for their bagel offerings.
Think home-cured salt beef, lox with cream cheese and dill vinaigrette, or their world-famous pastrami, swiss and Russian dressing. The crab shack bagel is one of my all-time favourites, loaded with crab claw, bacon, chipotle mayo and avo – this bad boy is one of the stars of the show.
Veggies and vegans are looked after too- look to their Bagel Ganoush or little Italy breaded mozzarella bagel if you do not believe me.
Point is, the bagels at Eat New York are mega, and there is no better place to show your support to the humble Bagel than here this ‘Have a Bagel Day.’
