First opening up in London’s Mayfair back in 2019, Lucky Cat is one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant brands, an “authentic Asian eating house and vibrant late-night lounge, inspired by the drinking dens of 1930s Tokyo and the far east”.
This weekend, a licence application for a brand-new Lucky Cat in Manchester appeared on the Council website, with Ramsay looking to take over the old HSBC Bank at the top of King Street – former home of fellow celebrity chef venture – Jamie’s Italian.
The application includes plans for “trading on three floors” indicating that the building’s famous Bank Vault will be in use once again, as well as the upper mezzanine balcony spaces above the former main banking floor.
Lucky Cat opened up to some controversy down in London in 2019, but has been fairing much better in subsequent years (pandemic withstanding), so much so that Ramsay is bringing the concept up North.
The menu at Lucky Cat is designed for sharing, with small plates cooked on a Robata Grill. There’s Grilled Black Cod, Spiced Lamb Chops and Hand Dived Scallops, all alongside a menu of Maki, unique Dumplings & Bao Buns, and Tempura-fried dishes.
Lucky Cat also features a dedicated Sunday menu featuring huge ‘Sunday Shares’ such as the Whole Slow Roasted Maryfields Duck and Thai-Style Fried Bass – designed to be devoured at the table – family-style.
In addition, there’s a Late Night Menu of sushi and skewers available until 1am, Asian-inspired cocktails and an extensive menu of Japanese Sake.
With a spate of similar openings coming to the city centre over the next 12 months, with Sexy Fish coming to Spinningfields, alongside Giggling Squid, MUSU, the recent Kitten in Deansgate Square, and Neon Tiger on Bridge Street, not to mention the already firmly established likes of Tattu – it’ll be very interesting to see just how Lucky Cat performs in Manchester.
