I remember being young and accompanying my Grandma on her Saturday morning stroll through Newcastle’s Grainger Market to collect my Grandad’s butcher quality sausage and bacon.
We were always greeted warmly by the pink cheeked butcher with the thickest Geordie accent who’d be so grateful for our custom, and people like my Grandma have allowed it to continue to operate still to this very day.
You might have once thought that these kind of local, independently run butchers and fishmongers are a thing of the past, however BQ Farm and Fish in Monton is sure to change your mind!
The venue, which opened today, is a collaboration between both The Butcher’s Quarter and Wandering Palate who aim to focus on sourcing from the best producers across the UK, with BQ Farm and Fish maintaining this principle throughout the shop.
You’ll find loads of amazing products from independent, local businesses filling the shelves. For example, the fish counter has high-quality fish that has been sustainably line-caught off the British coast. It’s so fresh that it’s delivered from the sea straight to the counter by the following day.
There’s also a grocer section where each item on offer can be traced back to individual local farms. They stock whatever is in season at the time so you know the produce is fresh, organic and hasn’t travelled far.
As well as offering a stunning selection of food to take out (and finally perfect that Tom Kerridge recipe you’ve been slaving over for months with), BQ Farm and Fish also serves a selection of small plates, breakfast sandwiches, as well as coffee, wines and cocktails.
The team also has some big plans to host supper clubs in the space using all of the fresh ingredients they stock.
The guys from Wandering Palate and The Butcher’s Quarter were both nominated for the Best Independent Retailers of the Year award at last year’s Manchester Food & Drink Awards, so with their combined expertise and enthusiasm for great products, this new shop is really exciting.
BQ Farm and Fish is currently closed Mondays, open 9:00am – 6:00pm Tuesday – Saturday and 10:00am – 4:00pm Sunday.
