Back in July, Bernie’s sadly announced the closure of its Heaton Moor store, which was the businesses first venue sparking its journey as an independent grocery store offering specialty produce to the community.

Since then, there’s been speculation as to who will be taking over the sought after Heaton Moor space, and last week Bernie’s finally confirmed that speciality coffee roasters, Kobean will be permanently moving in!

Kobean has been residing in Pollard Yard since August last year, and has a commitment to combating the refined sugar, artificial flavour and dairy heavy reliance created by the national high street coffee houses.

Its ethos is simple, focusing on sustainable, biodiverse and organic farming techniques that not only protect and enhance the environment, but produce a clean, true product of the earth with traceability at its core.

Owner Kobe has a real passion for coffee, which he found after he was introduced to the variety of coffee cultures whilst travelling across Europe. His roasts are sourced as ethically as possible, supporting fair trade farms that create naturally delicious coffee blends.

Taking to Instagram, Kobean said: We’re delighted to finally announce the opening of our coffee shop! Find us in the old Bernie’s unit in Heaton Moor.

“This space will allow us to take our select coffee lots, from working with importers and producers at farm level to roasting and resting, all the way to brewing and serving. It’s a new progressive coffee experience, celebrating the producers through their rare varieties and experimentally processed micro-lots. All while supporting our transparent and conscious ideology.

“Not only will we showcase a revolving menu of outstanding coffee, in-house made sandwiches and brioche, high-end grab and go snacks, but also a selection of amazing baked goods on the counter from some of our favourite local suppliers and friends.”

Some of the independent businesses already confirmed for Kobean include; Bernie’s, Patels Pies, Long Boi’s Bakery, Pollen, The Flat Baker, Blendsmiths, Devil Dog Sauces, Patatas Torres, Porello Olives, Mackies of Scotland, Chu Lo Drinks and Karma Drinks.

The coffee shop is open now.
