There are some great places in Manchester where you can get a kebab. There’s the sublime BAB in the Northern Quarter, Doner Haus in the Corn Exchange, and the Lamb Seekh from Cafe Marharba on Back Piccadilly.
There’s now a new kid in town though, one which offers totally VEGAN kebabs – and they’ve set up shop on the ground floor of YES. Welcome to Manchester Döner Summer.
After a few months touring the UK with their disco-twist vegan kebabs and cocktails, Andy Tordoff and Chris Riley-Smith set up shop in York and Leeds, which invariably has now involved a move to Manchester and a spot in one of the city’s hottest venues.
Döner Summer started back in 2018 after the duo went on a research trip to Berlin and enjoyed their legendary, fresh kebabs over there. They decided to re-create them over here, but ‘veganise‘ them – offering their own meat substitutes and fresh, quality ingredients. They claim that meat eaters can’t tell the difference between their ‘meat’ and the real stuff – seems like a Pepsi Challenge is on the cards with that one.
Their menu is 100% vegan and includes such delights as their classic Berlin Doner Kebab (£6); their secret spice seitan doner with pickled cabbage, all the salad, scotch bonnet hot sauce & pink aioli, served in a pide flatbread, and their Berlin Shawarma Kebab (£7); with chick’n shawarma, salad, Turkish pepper, green chilli sauce and a herb ailoi.
They also offer up Fried ‘Chick’n’ as well as fries and garlic fries. Basically they’re just demanding a visit, and with the cheap pints and great terrace up top at YES – you’re guaranteed a top time all round.
