The Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards 2022 are fast approaching, with the awards ceremony unveiling the UK’s Top 50 restaurants set to take place on Monday 13th June.
In the run-up to the event, they’ve been releasing shortlists for other categories, of which some of them have included Manchester venues, such as Where The Light Gets In being placed on the shortlist to find the UK’s Most Sustainable restaurant.
2022 sees a brand-new award take place, the ‘Food Lovers Award‘ which has been voted for by the general public. Well, today they released the 10 finalists and it features the Northern Quarter’s very own DISTRICT.
Describing itself as a New Wave Thai restaurant “inspired by a future Bangkok”, DISTRICT has made a huge impact in the city since opening at the tail end of last year. From the brains behind the phenomenal Tokyo Ramen, this place not only looks cool AF but the food is truly spectacular.
Its menus explore progressive barbecue cooking that has a focus on traditional Thai food, but gives it a modern twist. It takes inspiration from other cultures to fuse a tasting menu that’s unlike anything you’ve ever eaten before.
DISTRICT came to life after the owners of Tokyo Ramen saw a gap in the market for a Neofuturistic interpretation of Bangkok’s street food in the city.
Thai inspiration allows District to put things like ‘Not Tacos’ on the menu: perfectly formed morsels of beef brisket saturated in a juicy, coconut-infused curry, served on a ‘pancake’ – heavily influenced by southern Thai ‘roti’, definitely not a taco.
The venue has also bagged itself a prestigious spot in the Michelin guide and has had some outstanding reviews from big publications such as The Times during its short stint as a restaurant, and now I’m sure the team are ecstatic to be in the final of this prestigious award.
