If you have ever been to Greece you might have been lucky enough to eat some Spanakopita, look around some ruins, gaze out into the sea and of course, drink some Ouzo.
Now if you aren’t a fan of the aniseed-y things in life or the burning sensation it leaves on your oesophagus 4.8 seconds after consuming it, then Ouzo might not be the spirit for you. I was certainly of this school of thought until last week…
However, things change for me, and my scaring memories from bad girls holidays in Corfu were quickly dissolved went I tried the Ouzo Mussels at BAB. New to the mezze menu for one month only, this plate of food proved a real success.
It turns out that Ouzo treated correctly is a mighty fine thing indeed. Paired with the salty stock that escapes from the mussels along with the sweet flesh, fennel, garlic and plenty of seasoning, this steaming bowl of mussels knocked traditional Moules Mariniere out of the park.
The flavour became more subtle and sweet and was the perfect accompaniment to the delicious shellfish. What’s more, this dish came paired with toasted sourdough and a black garlic taramasalata for spreading – I mean could it be any more Greek?!
Honestly, this dish is top so I felt it was worth shouting about. It is also great for sharing and makes a fantastic start to any meal at BAB. It is only available until 8th July – so get down and make up for those bad Ouzo memories before it is too late!
