Mostly because there are SO many great chips knocking around the city and if we’re being honest – a lot of people are likely to get angry with our choices.

In choosing the best chips we wanted no bells or whistles knocking about – no cheese, no meat, no gravy – basically the best actual bog-standard potato chips in the city – one’s that are crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle and most importantly – consistent.

Don’t start going on about chippies either – they’re a completely different kind of chip and worthy of a top 5 all by themselves.

Cajun Fries at Five Guys

Yes, okay so Five Guys are a rather large chain, but they take their chips (and potatoes) extremely seriously and it’s clear to see that within every single bite. Each branch proudly display their sacks of potatoes right in the middle of the restaurant, as well as the type of potato and where they are from. Each chip is created in store and they use a lovely peanut oil for frying and top with a Cajun salt. Brilliant.

Canton Salt & Pepper Curly Fries at Flock

These magnificent beauties combine two of the greatest things in the world – creating something that is so much more than the sum of its parts. Much like a Megazord in Power Rangers but with more spice and more curly bits. Flock get some curly fries (well known as the greatest form of potato known to man) and then add their own signature 6 spice blend for the best Salt & Pepper chips in existence ever.

Man Bites Frites at Man Bites Frog

It must be said that our friends across the Channel certainly know how to make a chip. Not only did the French invent and perfect the fry, but pretty much every single meal bought in Belgium is a pile of chips absolutely pissing with mayonnaise. So a French gaff in Chorlton should be expected to do great chips right? Correct! They do. Man Bites Frites are amazing – not too thick, not too thin, skin left on and cooked to perfection. They are then tossed in a combo of salt, pepper and rosemary and are just divine.

Beef Dripping Fries at Hawksmoor

Ever since Maccies stopped using beef fat in their fries – the world of chips just hasn’t been the same. Luckily for anyone searching for that elusive meaty crunch need look no further than Hawksmoor and their delicious Beef Dripping beauties. These are perfect alongside their signature steaks, or even just enjoyed as a snack at the bar while sinking a lovely ice-cold pint.

Thrice Cooked Chips at The Bay Horse Tavern

Consistency is the key contributor to why these chips are the best in the city – we’ve never had a bad one at The Bay Horse Tavern which considering the difficulties of cooking potatoes – is a true revelation. These beauties are fluffy wedges of perfection – thrice cooked so they’re crispy and crunchy and perfect for dipping into a little pot of gravy. If you’ve not had them – sort it out right now.
