Let’s get the obvious out the way with the smashed avocado with poached eggs. I do not want to sound cynical when I say that Poached Egg and Avocado on a menu is pretty obvious; in fact now its a ‘goes-without-saying’ staple. But the one at Volta actually manages to stand out from the crowd.
Firstly, the eggs were cooked to perfection and beautifully runny- releasing a satisfying creamy yellow river upon splitting open the yolk. The sourdough toast was crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle and topped with a dreamy avocado smash, sun-blushed tomatoes and chilli flakes. Top Notch.
Next up we tried the Sticky Chorizo Baked Eggs of which we were a big fan. I was relieved to see full inch-long proper chorizo sausages rather than sad little slices which were soft, flavorful and melted in the mouth. The sauce was rich and filling, and the egg was perfectly runny which mixed up into a delectable little bowl of loveliness – which was then perfect for mopping up with the accompanying soft chunk of sourdough.
Finally, we sampled the Lamb Shawarma Hash. Now, I must say I was on board with the idea of this dish but wasn’t sure if it was going to be right at breakfast time. It turns out I was wrong, and I really need to stop letting my presumptions get the best of me because I could eat this all day long.
It is basically a delicious concoction of slow-cooked lamb, with crushed new potatoes and various spices and shaped into a cake. It is then topped with an oh-so-runny soft poached egg with a side of pickles which is always a quick way to win over my heart – take note eligible bachelors of Manchester.
The new Brunch Menu includes many more dishes that we were too reserved to try – our reputation for being greedy is something that we are trying to shake off. There’s the Classic Bacon Butty, Cured Salmon & Poached Egg and for all you protein seekers – Steak, Eggs & Chimichurri. Basically, something for everyone.
Throughout all of these dishes we were sipping on a couple of refreshingly delicious Bloody Mary’s – which come in a variety of heats – depending on your personal preference. A 3 (out of 10) had a nice tangy kick while an 8 was a scorcher – the perfect remedy to sort your sore head out in the morning .
Sat outside in the sunshine at Volta enjoying these brunch dishes while sipping on a Bloody Mary or two is the ONLY way to spend a Saturday morning. If you cannot find me at all this Bank Holiday Weekend – I will almost certainly be there.
