So, it was with a heavy heart that Siam Smiles, the brilliant cafe housed in a small supermarket in a basement in China Town was no more. Many a salty tear was shed, most noticeably my mate Steven who was found wandering around the old site for weeks later, foaming at the mouth desperate for some noodles and a bit of pork belly.
Well there’s no need to fret any longer. China Town’s loss is the Great Northern’s gain as Siam Smiles have just opened up a new site on Deansgate Mews. The Mews is that weird street bit down the side of the Great Northern, currently housing Polish favourite, Platzki and former home to B.Eat Street – you know the one.
Everything is as you’d expect it to be, and they’re not going to be adding bells, whistles and fireworks to gloss over a change in menu. It’s business as usual which means mouth-wateringly good traditional Thai dishes – at very reasonable prices.
I’ve been informed that their lunchtime buffet will be starting up again sometime towards the end of May, so keep an eye on that – in the meantime I reckon I’ll have to grab Steven and we can both get down and do a review. Just to make sure it’s as good as it was of course. Purely scientific of course.
