This stunning Benedict is worth the trip alone, with their own toasted sourdough topped with slow-cooked ox cheek, homemade Sriracha, free range eggs and hollandaise.

A recent addition to the whole brunch scene, the Edinburgh Castle have been smashing it over the last couple of weeks, offering up a more ‘sophisticated’ take on most of the traditional brunch dishes you’d expect elsewhere. What does that mean? Well, it means you’re getting the highest quality ingredients and some proper innovation, such as you’d find on their Cider Glazed Ham Hock Benedict. They’re not just throwing some wafer thin Billy Bear Ham on there, this is proper ham hock, that’s been slow cooked and then glazed in cider. A class act all round.

With a reputation for HUGE pancakes and mightily impressive Full English Breakfasts, you’ll also be pleased to know that they’re re-introducing their Eggs Benny this week – and you should probably pop in and get involved. One of the Pen & Pencil’s best selling dishes ever, it quickly becomes apparent why it’s so popular once the Eggs Pen & Pencil arrives at your table. It’s sort of like a fusion of a Full English and Eggs Benedict, with an impressive portion of sausage patties, and bacon perched on top of a couple of poached eggs which themselves are coated in hollandaise and sat neatly on some grilled sourdough. The final touch of a red onion chutney brings the whole dish together nicely.

Would any list of brunch or brunch dishes ever be complete without a mention of Federal? No, probably not as this supremely popular and consistently excellent cafe serve up some of the city’s best brunch every single day of the week. Queues in the tiny NQ branch are usually pretty daunting, but once you’re in there and sat down, you can’t go wrong with their Eggs Benedict, the classic combination of poached eggs and hollandiase on sourdough which you can then customise with bacon, avocado, smoked salmon or halloumi.
