Viva la Rivoluzione! Things are changing for Pizza down in Altrincham

We went down to Blanchflower last week for a nosy into their new pizza pop-up which is challenging everything we think we know about pizza...

Switching up from their daytime coffee and cake shop, Blanchflower just outside of Altrincham Market is serving evening drinks and sophisticated Roma pizzas with their new Friday & Saturday evening pop-up by Pizza Rivoluzione.

The street it sits on is bustling, particularly on the weekend, and Blanchflower has just the right amount of picnic tables outside to grab some evening pizzas and cocktails in a cool, relaxed environment.

As for the food, there is a good selection of starters and small plates perfect for sharing including the usual Olives (£3), a Smoked Chicken Mousse served with soused leeks and a Focaccia Bruschetta (£5.50) topped with a sprinkling of micro herbs

You’ll also find Veggie Arancini (£5.50) stuffed with mozzarella, truffled wild mushrooms and served with rocket and basil pesto. We wanted to kept things simple (and save space for those pizzas) and opted for some simple marinated olives instead.

The main event is the pizzas and what they are calling the ‘pizza revolution’ which replaces the on-trend Neopolitan pizzas with a menu of focaccia based pizzas and Romana pizzas.

These bases are inspired by traditional Rome pizzas, rejecting the wood-fired sourdough bases that have overtaken restaurants across the UK in recent years.

The pizzas are served with a wide range of toppings on pre-baked bread that is warmed up in the oven. We tried the Caprese Foccacia (£9) and King Prawn Romana (£13).

The Caprese Foccacia is a twist on the traditional Italian salad, Caprese. The pizza is served on a thick and crunchy focaccia bread base, topped with plenty of sweet, sun blushed tomatoes, shredded mozzarella and fresh basil pesto squeezed over the top.

The generous portion of rocket means the pizza showcases the 3 colours of the Italian flag a staple in a Caprese salad.

The King Prawn Pizza Romana served on a rustic, homemade crunchy base with a sweet tomato sauce, perfectly cooked soft prawns. The pizza was finished with fresh and creamy mascarpone and a very subtle hint of fresh chilli.

No pizza night is complete without chips and luckily, Pizza Rivoluzione at Blanchflower had some divine Triple Cooked House Fries (£3).

These were coated in a dribble of truffle oil which wasn’t at all overpowering as it can sometimes be and scattered in plenty of parmesan slices which promptly melted with delicious results.

To finish we had the Limoncello Lemon Meringue Pie (£5) served with strawberries coated in sticky sugar syrup. The meringue was soft, sweet and with a slight crunch from the toasted top. It was filled with a tart Limoncello lemon curd filling.

I could have eaten this a million times!

We also tried their Affogato (£4.50). A very Italian coffee-based dessert with sweet vanilla ice cream drowned with espresso and Amaretto – the perfect homage to the true taste of the motherland.

We were lucky enough to sample some of the new cocktails which are set to be on the new menu ready for evening drinks made by Shawn our waiter. We tried the new Summer Berry Mojito made with an in-house berry cordial, rum and plenty of fresh mint.

The cocktail menu is set to launch soon and I expect Pizza Rivoluzione at Blanchflower to become a staple for summertime drinks in Altrincham.

The outside area is the perfect place to enjoy an Aperol spritz, pizza, sharing plates and watch the world go by.

The Pizza Rivoluzione will be at Blanchflower every Friday & Saturday night 19th May to 21st September 2019 and I urge you to get down and sample this slice of Rome in the heart of Altrincham!
