Masterchef winner Simon Wood’s flagship restaurant WOOD is a popular fine dining spot with a distinctly Northern accent. Focused on seasonal and nostalgic flavours, the First Street restaurant showcases the unique personality of its well known chef proprietor – who won the BBC show back in 2015.

One of the restaurant’s most popular menus is the evening tasting menu, a collection of playful dishes that take the diner on a journey of outstanding, locally sourced British produce. Due to popular demand, the restaurant is offering diners 50% off its evening tasting menu every Wednesday throughout May, meaning you can enjoy a procession of Simon’s newest plates for £55 per person.

Highlights from the latest evening menu include koji cured bavette with wild garlic and charcoal, and cod with smoked lemon and ‘vegetables from the sea’. A French onion soup is another new addition to evenings at WOOD, made with beef bones stock and finished with fresh chive onion embers and lovage in a beef suet pot.

The sweeter side of the menu features another dish often found in a Northern grandma’s kitchen. The Yorkshire rhubarb and custard uses locally sourced rhubarb from fourth generation grower of Yorkshire forced rhubarb, Robert Tomlinson, along with hay baked apple with koji caramel custard and marigold

Other dishes on the tasting menu include ‘Tunworth tater’, hen’s egg with truffled chips and ham, and spring lamb with buttered leeks, cabbage and bacon.

Describing his tasting menu, Simon explains: “The finest suppliers in the country provide seasonal, high welfare, foraged exceptional produce, which will be treated with the utmost respect.

“Salt, milk, butter, vinegars, wines, oils, herbs and spices must be of the highest quality throughout the restaurant. Amazing produce treated correctly, as in the end, any dish is only as good as the products you are using.”

WOOD also offers seasonal wine flights which can be paired with the tasting menu for £75 per person. And if that isn’t enough for you, WOOD’s dedicated cheese and wine venue Homage has also been a huge hit with guests over the past few months. Currently running a £25 ‘Taste of Homage’ five cheese and wine menu, which has sold out online, reservations are still available via email if you’re interested in booking in. You can email reservations@woodmanchester.com.
