Manchester-based Studio Critical: creates tactile wooden objects. Maker Nick Vostermans, based at Studio Critical in Manchester, focuses his practice on using locally and sustainably sourced materials. His wooden spoons, bowls, furniture and functional pieces are handmade, many of them from green wood salvaged from urban trees that fell naturally or were trimmed.
Nick sees woodwork not only as a way to create beautiful everyday objects but as a rejection of mass production and consumerism. By mindfully constructing each piece using hand tools, he can make usable, treasured pieces from renewable and sustainable resources. Head to Studio 25 at the Manchester Craft and Design Centre to see an exhibition of his work until Saturday 24 August. The exhibition is free to visit and is open Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5.30pm and the second Sunday of the month from 11am – 5pm.
