Last week a lucky few people and I were treated to a tantalising array of performances by Slippery Belle Burlesque stars Millie Dollar, Velma Van Bon Bon and Missy Malone at Manchester 235 Casino.
Unlike any of the other people at my table that evening I went into the night having seen a few Burlesque shows already, this mix of ‘Burlesque Virgins‘ – as branded by the brash yet eloquent compare – and ‘Burlesque ‘Lovers‘ added a great dynamic to the room, and the show certainly did not disappoint either group.
We were entertained and mesmerised, men and women of the audience in equal measure, with a wondrous mix of what I’d consider classic Burlesque, and some more ‘interesting‘ shows including one evolved from an episode of Scooby Doo! For tho me the stand out act was Liverpool’s Millie Dollar, a great set of routines and the loudest roar of the evening she controlled the room with ease.
Tickets for the event were charged at £45, which when you factor in the champagne cocktail on arrival, three course dinner and DJ into the early hours it’s basically a free show. The food was fantastic and thoroughly deserves a mention, Linen the restaurant within 235 will be getting a visit very soon!
Hayley Harthern, Manchester235 Event Manager said: “We’re delighted to be bringing these unique acts to Manchester and have had a fantastic response to the event so far. The ‘Manchester235 Goes Burlesque’ event kicks off our move into hosting more innovative and exciting events throughout 2012, the second of which will be a huge Circus-themed event at the end of April.”
To finish the show Manchester’s Jazz songbird and renowned cabaret singer Coco Malone, hailed as a modern day Billie Holiday, performed a grand finale before myself and a few people from my table hit the casino, £1 minimum bets all round.
235 have said they will be running more of these Burlesque evenings and I’m certainly looking forward to the next one.
