With festival season a touching distance away, there are tonnes of celebrations across Manchester, from weekend dance festivals to dedicated booze celebrations and everything in between.
Manchester Reggae Festival has been a favourite for a few years now, offering up the very best Reggae acts from across the world all in one very convenient city centre location.
After taking place last year at Bowler’s Exhibition Centre with some unavoidable COVID restrictions, the festival is finally back in its finest form – restriction free and right in the heart of the city at Manchester Academy!
This year, the massive line-up will be graced by the likes of Inner Circle, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Third World, Black Uhuru and Eek A Mouse.
Also on the bill is Jamaican roots Reggae musician, Horace Andy who will be joined by the Dub Asante Band featuring Matic Horns – a trumpet player who puts his own eclectic spin on traditional Reggae and Dub beats.
The King Yellowman Show Ft K’reema and The Saggitarius Band is definitely not one to miss, either. King Yellowman shot to fame in the early 80s, becoming one of Jamaica’s very first dancehall superstars with hits such as ‘Zungguzungguguzungguzeng’ and ‘Lost Mi Love’.
He was diagnosed with cancer in 1982 and given only three years to live, but after surgery to remove the tumours and part of his jaw removed, he was given the all clear. Since then, he has had a triumphant career, still performing at shows worldwide at the ripe age of 66!
Queens Of Lovers Rock, Carroll Thompson is performing at this year’s festival, too, and will be joined by Janet Kay, another stunning Reggae vocalist who is most famous for her song ‘Silly Games’ – a true Reggae classic carried along by chugging guitars and steel rhythms.
Completing the line-up this year is Gardna, Manchester’s famous Dub Smugglers Sound System and Ruff Trade, three acts that are bound to tear the roof off the venue with sets from insane DJs blasting through one of the best sound system’s the city has to offer.
