Walks Near Manchester: Below Kinder Scout

For those of us who aren't quite ready or prepared to ascend Kinder Scout there is a fantastic reservoir walk around the base.

Starting off with a bit of breakfast / lunch head to the near by village of Hayfield, there’s a couple of cafes and some good pub grub to be had.

Hop back in the car, or walk the 20 extra minutes, from Hayfield village centre up to Kinder Reservoir and start this 2.5 hr (approx) circular walk up to the moorland, around the water and back down to the reservoir entrance.

The National Trust lists this walk as moderate, I would take this is one step above easy, it may prove a little tiring with very small children but for the most part it is hard earth underfoot and perfectly stable.

Starting the walk at the entrance to the res’ and heading up the cobbled walkway takes you to a great vantage point and view of the abandoned Victorian water works building.

There are higher vantage points to come. As the path forks head up to the next junction then right along the moorland path, fantastic views over the reservoir, hills and of Kinder Scout.

Follow the path down and across the little bridge, at this point you could head up Kinder but for the purposes of this we turn right and continue along beside the reservoir.

On a cold crisp and sunny day this walk is great, there’s photo opportunity a plenty and only the occasional fell runner, who’ll make you feel like you need to do more exercise, but this feeling will pass as you tuck into the flapjack you bought from the little lad who sells them for £1 out of the back of his parents van.

There is a link here to the National Trust and a more detailed plan for a slightly longer version of this walk, we cut out part of the start.
