This is Stanley Chow’s first solo exhibition. He will be displaying 100 of his favourite illustrations from the past 7 years.
Stanley Chow’s career effectively began in 1996 when he started DJing at Night & Day Café on Oldham Street. Whilst playing records, he also ended up designing the flyers and posters for various clubnights that were based at Night & Day at the time, then gradually for more and more different venues and bars around Manchester.
In 1999, The Central Illustration Agency (CIA) started representing him. This was a massive career change. The CIA was a great help in getting new work and opening doors. The kind of work that Stanley was initially getting included editorial fashion illustration, commissioned by the likes of GQ, Elle, Marie Claire, Company magazine and Marks & Spencers.
Forward to 2001, Bernstein and Andriulli are now representing Stanley Chow in America. Since then his client base has grown and he has been commissioned by Vodafone, BT, Volkswagen, BBC and The Government. His work can be regularly seen in various national newspapers and magazines.
In 2007, Stan designed a limited edition USB stick for the White Stripes to coincide with the release of their album ‘Icky Thump’. It was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2008, in a design category.
In April 2010. The Graham Norton caricature/cartoon he designed interrupted the climax of an episode of Dr Who… causing thousands of complaints from fans.
Stan Chow is also currently working regularly for the New Yorker magazine.
The exhibition launches on Thursday 31st May from 6pm with a sound track provided by Funkademia DJs. The exhibition runs for three weeks.
